Reading 4th quarter 2007

(* = reread)

* The Storyteller's Pack, collection of short stories by Frank Stockton -- my favorite such collection in the world. My especial favorites in this collection are "The Bee-Man of Orn," "The Queen's Museum," and "The Transferred Ghost."

* Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Mosey and I read this aloud to each other when she was in the hospital with appendicitis. It was my first time to read this aloud (or hear it read aloud) and let me tell you, this is the best way to read it -- it's even more clever when you're actually saying the lines.

* Leave it to Psmith, my all-time favorite Wodehouse.

Tending the Heart of Virtue, by Vigen Guroian. Recommended by Cindy R, very good of course -- all parents and grandparents should read this.

* Ideas Have Consequences, by Richard Weaver. My second time to read this excellent book, this time as part of an online discussion with a few other bloggers. Everyone should read this.

Hannah Coulter, Wendell Berry. Beautiful.

Home Education, Charlotte Mason. Very helpful -- wish I'd read it when my oldest were tots.

What Are People For?, collection of essays by Wendell Berry. Very good, of course.

Nutrition and Physical Degeneration, Weston A. Price, D.D.S. Enlightening. Wish this were required reading in all the medical schools.

Minerals for the Genetic Code, Charles Walters. Analysis of the work of Dr. Richard Olree; I need to brush up on my chemistry in order to evaluate the claims being made. Unfortunately, all of Charles Walters' books are written at the popular level and he neglects to include footnotes or even a bibliography. This is a serious weakness.

Father Brown Omnibus, by G.K. Chesterton. Okay when taken in small doses, but let's just say that I like Chesterton's non-fiction better than his fiction.

I'm also reading Tending the Heart of Virtue, and it is excellent. I'm not sure if I heard of it from Cindy or Mars Hill Audio first, though :)
